The accurate English test with fast results

The accurate English test with fast results

Linguaskill is a quick, convenient and reliable online test that assesses the English levels of individuals and groups of candidates. It evaluates all four language skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. The test is powered by advanced artificial intelligence and uses computer-adaptive technology, providing a personalised and accurate assessment for each candidate.

Organisations can have Linguaskill administered and invigilated at your venue at a time that suits you, and individuals can do the same at our premises. The test is modular, meaning you can choose to assess only the skills relevant to your needs. It delivers fast results from three working days, depending on session size and delivery mode. Results are aligned to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) from B1 to C2 and also reported on the Cambridge English Scale.

Two versions of the test are available, Business and General, allowing you to select the type of English most appropriate for your institution or organisation.

Modular testing

Reading and Listening are delivered as separate adaptive modules, where the difficulty of the test adjusts according to each candidate’s performance. This ensures a personalised experience and an accurate score.

Test format
Approx. 40 minutes (maximum 59 minutes). The number of questions varies because the module is adaptive. Task types include short multiple choice, gap-fill, long text comprehension, missing sentence or paragraph tasks, and multiple text matching.
Approx. 40 minutes (maximum 59 minutes). The number of questions varies. Task types include short and long multiple choice, sentence completion, and single-task and dual-task multiple matching based on different audio recordings.
55 minutes. The Writing module has two parts. Part 1 is an Email with a recommended minimum of 50 words (worth 25% of the final score). Part 2 is an Essay for the General version or a Report for the Business version, with a recommended minimum of 250 words (worth 75% of the final score). All writing is marked by trained Cambridge examiners.
Approximately 16 minutes. This module is taken via computer with a headset and microphone. Responses are recorded and assessed using hybrid marking (human examiners plus auto-marking technology). The structure includes a short warm-up (unmarked) followed by five parts: Presentation, Summary of a recording, Discussion questions, Recommendation based on given information, and an Argument task where candidates present and evaluate viewpoints.

Test options

Within Linguaskill there are two test options, General and Business. This lets you choose the type of English that will be tested, based on your objectives.

Linguaskill General

Linguaskill General tests English used in daily life, making it suitable for university admission and recruitment for roles in a non-business-specific environment. For example, where the employee needs strong English skills to perform their role effectively, but does not need specialist business terminology.

This makes the test suitable for a broad range of organisations. Test topics include studying and working, making future plans, travel and technology.

It offers the same flexible structure as Linguaskill Business, with separate modules for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, and fast results presented in detailed Test Reports and Group Reports. Linguaskill Business is recognised globally and is well suited for recruitment, internal promotion, professional development and training programmes.

Results and reporting

Accurate and detailed

Gain insight into candidates’ abilities. Individual Test Reports provide a Cambridge English Scale score, CEFR level and detailed performance breakdown per module. Group Reports allow institutions to compare cohorts or analyse performance across large groups.

Results availability

Results are typically available from 3-5 working days if testing in a centre, and 6-8 for remote testing. Exact timing varies depending on candidate volume and whether the test is taken in-centre or remotely.

Certificate

Linguaskill results are presented in a certificate-style online report. If a candidate performs below B1 in a module, that module does not appear on the certificate. Certificates do not expire, though organisations may set their own validity period.

My Best Score

Candidates may retake a module to improve their results without retaking the entire test. The highest score achieved in each module is always the one shown on the final certificate.

Score and level comparison

Linguaskill reports CEFR levels B1 to C2 and Cambridge English Scale scores:
  • B1: 140–159
  • B2: 160–179
  • C1: 180–199
  • C2: 200–210

Preparation materials

A wide range of free and official preparation tools is available, including sample tests for all modules, learning support videos, assessment criteria for Speaking and Writing, lesson plans, and practice tools such as Write & Improve and Speak & Improve.

Candidates can also prepare using the Linguaskill Online Tutor Intro course or the Linguaskill Trainer book, which includes practice tests, guidance and digital resources. Both the General and Business versions are supported with dedicated learning materials.
